I have friends who are fans of that venerable old lady of English Football, Notts County. They haven’t exactly enjoyed the last few years, the idea of the leagues oldest club slipping out of League two (as it currently styles itself) is hardly edifying and their last few seasons would’ve marked them down as one of the favourites to drop this time around.

There is, however, an air of optimism surrounding Meadow (pronounced Medder) Lane. Not because of new money, new signings or a sparking pre-season. This silver lining comes courtesy of the Football League and their Post-Leeds2007 draconian measures.

Having slapped a 30 point deduction on Luton earlier in the Summer they’ve seen fit to take 17 points a piece from Bournemouth and Rotherham, making it very likely that the those three will contest the bottom two places.

I don’t intend to discuss the rights and wrongs of these deductions here, other than to say I thoroughly agreed with the Leeds decision so it’d be a tad hypocritical to change now. I’d rather all football clubs were run well, but I’m sure there are a number out there that are still walking a very precarious financial tightrope.

I’m also gratified that these measures exist now and not a few years back when my own club were playing the administration game.

So for fans of a number of once fearful fans up and down the land there’s a new game in town…stay ahead of the football League Three!

Lets all join with the black n White faithful and a rousing shout of…

…GET WE’IT NOTTS!
